These images are a collection of 4x5 pinhole exposures that bring to light my interest in nature and in particular, the carbon cycle. Ask yourself where does the mass of a tree come from? The miracle of photosynthesis. Nature figured out a way to transform energy from the sun into energy for you and me. We have transformed that process into unbelievable things, including the plastic for a BBQ cover.

Pinhole photography, because of the long exposures and the lack of a view finder, provide an opportunity to draw some parallels with carbon. I immerse myself in the bush, breath, surround myself with silence and wait for light to act on the film in a little time capsule. There is a certain unpredictability and intuitivity about the event and the future of our planet.

I hope the viewer will take the time to wonder about this timeless cycle and position themselves in and surrounded by this miraculous element.

After graduating from Mount Allison University in 1987 with a BFA, Johnston moved to Mexico City with a scholarship to develop some visual ideas. Many ideas originated in the classroom where he has taught art and photography for thirty years. Installations were an important movement in the 1990’s and he produced three that were accepted in juried shows at El Museo de Monterrey and The Center for Photography in Mexico City. Upon his return to Canada, he continues his exploration into the nature of the photographic medium and presents his visual ideas in local markets. He lives in Mississauga.
