Ode to Julia Margaret Cameron (i), Linda Briskin

The series Ode to Julia Margaret Cameron is based on “Mountain Nymph, Sweet Liberty” taken by Cameron in 1866. With her moody portraits, Cameron was a pioneer in establishing photography as an art form.

Cameron’s photograph hangs in my kitchen and captures reflections from the garden and the neighbour’s wall, juxtaposing real objects and unreal reflections. The series reminds viewer of the layered textures present and imminent in the everyday.

The Ode to JMC engages with palimpsests which challenges the concept of the author as the exclusive source of her work. It embraces the artistic pleasure of photographing the work of another photographer, and at the same time creates an alternative reading of it, such that the original is both embraced and displaced. By definition, photography captures a moment in time, and yet such moments are unstable and fractious. This contemporary and layered reading of a nineteenth century photograph renders concrete the practice of photography as an evolving medium.

Linda Briskin is a writer and fine art photographer. She is intrigued by the ambiguities in what we choose to see. Her work explores the fluid crossover between the imagined and the real, the natural and the constructed, and the authentic and the fabricated.  Her focus is on inventing images rather than capturing them.

Briskin exhibits widely, has had numerous solo exhibitions, and participated in many group shows with her photographs frequently selected for online juried exhibitions. Her recent recognitions include Honourable Mentions in the Landscape Art Exhibition sponsored by Blue Koi Gallery (Kansas) and The Same But Different Exhibition hosted by the NY Center for Photographic Art. Briskin was also featured in Nuance of the North, (Artwrk), the Sanctuary Exhibit (Decagon Gallery), and the Landscape Exhibition (Grid Photo Gallery [UK]. Her photography has been published in literary journals and camera magazines. Recently, The Hopper, an environmental literary journal published nine photographs in Briskin’s series Intimate Conversations.
